How We Made Our Porch Our Favorite “Room” of the House

One of my favorite things about spring is getting our porch ready for another season of outdoor living.

After a few months of colder weather, the days start getting longer, the garden begins waking up, and I find myself wanting to spend as much time outside as possible.

Before long, the porch becomes one of the most-used spaces in our home.

Morning coffee happens there.

Sometimes lunch happens there.

And most evenings somehow end there too.

My husband often says it’s his favorite room in the house, and honestly, I think he might be right.

Over the years, I’ve realized that creating a space you love doesn’t require the perfect furniture, a designer’s eye, or a huge budget. The spaces we enjoy most are usually the ones that feel welcoming and comfortable—the ones that invite you to sit down and stay awhile.

If you’re looking to refresh your porch or create a space you’ll actually use, here are a few things that have made the biggest difference for us.

Start With a Good Cleaning

Before I buy a single plant or add any decorations, I always start with a good cleaning.

And if you live in Georgia, you already know exactly why.

Pollen.

By spring, our porch is usually covered in a fine layer of yellow dust, and no amount of decorating is going to make it feel inviting until everything gets cleaned.

Every year, I pressure wash the porch, furniture, railings, and anything else that sat outside through the winter.

It’s not the most exciting part of the process, but it makes the biggest difference.

A clean porch instantly feels brighter, fresher, and ready for the season ahead.

Treat Your Porch Like an Outdoor Room

One of the simplest things I’ve learned is that an outdoor space feels much more inviting when you treat it like a room instead of just a place where you put furniture.

For us, that starts with an outdoor rug.

A rug helps define the seating area and makes everything feel more intentional. Instead of furniture simply sitting on a porch, it begins to feel like an extension of your home.

It’s amazing how much warmth and structure one simple piece can add.

Once that foundation is in place, everything else tends to come together more naturally.

Add Comfortable Layers

I don’t go overboard with outdoor decorations, but I do think a few comfortable touches make a space feel much more welcoming.

A couple of outdoor pillows can completely change the feel of a porch. They make the furniture feel less formal and more like a place where people actually want to sit.

During cooler months, I usually add a throw blanket or two.

By late spring in Georgia, those disappear because blankets and ninety-degree temperatures aren’t exactly a perfect combination.

The goal isn’t to create a porch that looks like a showroom.

It’s to create a porch that makes you want to spend time there.

Bring a Little Life Into the Space

One of my favorite additions to our porch is our hummingbird feeder.

We don’t use traditional bird feeders near the porch because the birds around our house are constantly looking for new places to build nests, and apparently our porch is prime real estate.

The hummingbirds, however, are perfect visitors.

There’s something peaceful about sitting outside and watching them come and go throughout the day. They add movement and life to the space without taking away from the peaceful feeling we’re trying to create.

The only downside is that hummingbird feeders do require regular maintenance, especially during the warmer months. The nectar needs to be changed frequently in the Georgia heat.

But for me, it’s completely worth the extra effort.

Don’t Forget the Evenings

When you’re creating an outdoor space, don’t just think about how it looks during the day.

Some of my favorite porch moments happen after the sun goes down.

Lighting makes such a difference.

We use citronella candles and small tabletop torches, partly because they create a beautiful glow and partly because the mosquitoes in Georgia are relentless.

The soft lighting completely changes the atmosphere.

Suddenly, the porch feels cozy and relaxed—the kind of place where you sit a little longer, have one more conversation, or simply enjoy a quiet evening outside.

There is just something about candlelight outdoors that makes people want to linger.

Choose Plants That Fit Your Space

I’ve learned over the years that gardening is much easier when you work with your conditions instead of fighting against them.

Our porch receives a lot of shade, which means some plants thrive and others struggle.

Pothos has become one of my favorites because it is incredibly forgiving. Every fall, I bring it indoors, and every spring, it comes back outside.

It grows quickly, requires very little attention, and can easily be propagated into more plants.

We also keep hanging ferns and a palm on the porch because they handle the shade well and instantly make the space feel lush and welcoming.

I love plants, but I also appreciate plants that don’t require constant supervision.

Add Things That Make You Smile

This might be my favorite piece of advice.

Don’t worry about making your porch look like everyone else’s.

Make it look like yours.

Some of my favorite things in our home aren’t expensive or particularly trendy. They’re simply things that make us happy.

For example, we have a little wooden deer that I found last year at a craft festival. During Christmas, he wore a bow. After Christmas, the bow came off—but apparently he wasn’t going anywhere.

Now he’s a permanent porch resident.

I still haven’t given him a name, but I suspect it’s only a matter of time.

Whether it’s something you’ve collected while traveling, an antique find, a handmade piece, or a funny little decoration that makes you smile, those are often the things that give a space character.

They’re what make a house feel like home.

What I Love Most About Our Porch

Creating a cozy porch doesn’t require a major renovation or expensive furniture.

Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest difference:

A clean space.

A comfortable chair.

A few plants.

Soft lighting.

Personal touches that tell your story.

The best outdoor spaces aren’t necessarily the ones that look the most perfect.

They’re the ones people actually use.

They’re where coffee is poured, conversations happen, books get read, and ordinary evenings become some of your favorite memories.

For us, the porch has become more than just another area of the house.

It’s where we slow down.

It’s where we reconnect.

It’s where we enjoy the simple moments that make a home feel special.

And once spring arrives, I honestly can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be.

You may love...
