Sunshine Meadows: The Banff Hike We Almost Missed
When we planned our first trip to Banff, we had a pretty good idea of the big things we wanted to see.
After all, when you’re traveling somewhere like Banff for the first time, you want to make sure you don’t miss the iconic places. The Canadian Rockies are known for their incredible mountain views, crystal-clear alpine lakes, snow-capped peaks, and unforgettable outdoor experiences.
We only had three or four nights in Banff, so we wanted to make the most of our time.
I spent months researching and planning the things we knew we needed to reserve in advance. Places like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake require some extra planning, and I actually booked our shuttle tickets back in April to make sure we could experience them during our August trip.
But one of the things I’ve always loved about traveling is leaving a little room for the unexpected.
I don’t like every minute of a trip scheduled because sometimes the best recommendations come from a local, a conversation over breakfast, or a suggestion you never would have found on your own.
And that is exactly how we found one of our favorite experiences in Banff.
Thanks to our amazing bed and breakfast host (you can read more about our stay at Beaujolais Boutique B & B at Thea’s House here), where we were introduced to Sunshine Meadows.
And I still can’t believe we almost missed it.
A Banff Hike We Almost Overlooked
Banff is a place where you really need to appreciate the outdoors because that is where the magic is. Yes, you can shop, but goodness if you’re going to Banff- you need to get outdoors! Trust me.
The beauty of the Canadian Rockies is found in the mountains, the hiking trails, the alpine lakes, and the incredible landscapes that surround you everywhere you go. It’s also a place where you need to be prepared.
When we were planning our trip, we had several hikes we were considering, but Sunshine Meadows wasn’t one of the ones that initially made our list. As an avid researcher, I am usually good at finding unique places and experiences, but I’m giving myself a little grace here. There are so many hikes to choose from in the area. An overwhelming amount.
Looking back, I can’t believe we almost missed it though. I recommend it to everyone.
Sunshine Meadows ended up being one of our favorite hikes of the entire trip- both for Shawn and me.
Why We Loved Sunshine Meadows
One of the things that makes Sunshine Meadows so special is that you get all of the incredible mountain scenery without having to tackle a difficult uphill climb.
The hike itself begins at the top of the Sunshine Village ski resort, which is only about four miles outside of Banff. During the winter, this area is known for skiing, but in the summer months, it transforms into one of the most beautiful hiking areas.
To get to the trails, you can take the gondola up to the top. Now, if you’re like my daughter and enjoy hiking up mountains like a billy goat. Go for it- walk up to the top.
But my advice? Take the gondola.
Yes, it does cost around $50- $60 per person, but in my opinion, it is worth every penny. Without it, you’re adding several miles of steep uphill hiking before you even reach the beautiful part.
The gondola does the hard work for you and gets you right where you want to be- surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery Banff has to offer.
A Beautiful Hike Without the Hard Climb
What I loved about Sunshine Meadows is that it felt accessible while still being completely breathtaking.
Once you reach the top, you’re surrounded by alpine lakes, mountain views, and wide-open scenery that feels like you’ve stepped into another world.
In August, the wildflowers were everywhere. The colors, the views, and the peacefulness of being up above the valley made this hike unforgettable.
There are several different trails you can explore, but the main loop trail is the perfect way to experience the area. We ended up hiking around four to five miles, and the trail was relatively flat and enjoyable.
Instead of spending all your energy climbing, you get to spend your time taking in the views.
The trail winds around beautiful alpine lakes with crystal-clear blue water, through fields of wildflowers, and along paths where every turn gives you another incredible view.
It was the perfect combination of adventure and beauty.
The Perfect Way to End Your Hike
One of my favorite parts about Sunshine Meadows is that the experience doesn’t end when the hiking does.
Before heading back down on the gondola, there is a spot at the top where you can grab food, enjoy a beer or a drink, and sit outside while taking in the mountain views.
I think we each had a beer and split an order of nachos. It was pretty yummy!
After spending the day exploring, there is something pretty special about sitting outside on top of a mountain, enjoying the weather, and soaking in everything you just experienced.
It was the perfect ending to one of our favorite days in Banff.
Don’t Sleep on Sunshine Meadows
If you’re planning a trip to Banff during the summer months, I cannot recommend Sunshine Meadows enough.
It wasn’t one of the hikes we originally planned, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip.
Sometimes the places we almost miss become the places we remember most.
So if you’re visiting Banff, make sure Sunshine Meadows is on your list. Take the gondola, spend the day exploring the alpine lakes and wildflowers, and give yourself time to simply enjoy the beauty around you.
I have a feeling it might become one of your favorites too.
